The OC: The Pot Stirrer (episode 13)
As last week, I missed the first thirty minutes. Turns out, I didn't miss much!
It's Kaitlin's birthday, and Julie forgot. Hey, she's used having one daughter around, so sue her! Kaitlin is upset again. She's still hanging out with Johnny to make Marissa jealous.
Seth's interview with Brown is coming soon. Seth is stressed out, so... after seeing Kaitlin smoking a joint by the pier, he shocks us all by buying some primo shit from her. After only being in town for a week, it's pretty damn amazing that Kaitlin has such great pot connections. I've been in LA for two months and I barely know where Burbank is.
Julie arranges to have Kaitlin's hastily thrown together birthday party at the Roberts Mansion. I guess the trailer park wasn't good enough. Ryan tries to make peace between the Cooper sisters by telling Kaitlin to back off hanging out with Johnny. It only upsets Marissa. Kaitlin knows she still has feelings for Johnny, so she gets all up in Ryan's grill and says some really bitchy things to him. "I know everyone says you and Marissa are the perfect couple. But then again, they said that about Marissa and Luke too." ouch!
Sandy wants to build a free clinic in Newport, or in some other poor neighborhood that needs it. Only the doctor in charge doesn't like Sandy's way of pitching. Matt wants to "try it his way" because Sandy's trip to the pier for churros isn't impressing the doctor. Or the audience, for that matter.
With only a few hours to kill before his interview with Brown, it's go time for Seth. Does he try the pot? He looks at it, then a rolled up towel appears against the door, AND the window opens. Here comes the telltale smoke! Well, Brown is one of the more liberal-minded Ivy League schools, they should expect this behavior.
After Seth is smoking awhile, there's a knock at the door. He quickly enacts the Valerie Malone maneuver by spraying air freshener and hiding the doobies under some books. Ryan comes in and reminds him of the interview. After watching Seth pull classic stoner behavior (asking Ryan to feel his muscle, the overly mellow attitude, referring to Ryan as "Encyclopedia Brown") Ryan does figure out he's been smoking pot. While he tries to de-weed Seth, he calls Summer quickly (who miraculously is having her interview with Brown before Seth) and tells her to stall.
After a couple cups of coffee, Ryan drags Seth to the interview. Summer is just getting out. They don't tell Summer what happened. But Ryan does find out where Seth got the pot: Kaitlin. After Summer and Ryan leave, Seth walks to the door of the interview office. Suddenly he pulls a u-turn and walks in the other direction! Uh oh.
Katilin. Johnny. Her birthday party at Casa Roberts. Marissa is not having a good time, since Kaitlin has spent the whole afternoon fawning all over Johnny. Kaitlin puts on a big show for Johnny that she's now 15 and can fool around with him. Which makes no sense to me, but what do I know about teenage romance? She maneuvers a birthday kiss out of him. In Summer's bedroom, no less! When Kaitlin comes back downstairs, Marissa has been filled in by the arriving Ryan about her pot-selling escapades and starts tearing into her. But Kaitlin turns it around, saying Marissa luuuvs Johnny while going out with Ryan! Marissa pooh-poohs it, until Kaitlin smugly admits she was just making out with Johnny upstairs. Marissa gets upset, which isn't wasted on Ryan. Kaitlin has clearly won, and spins on her heel and walks away with Johnny.
Back to Sandy and Matt. Matt arranges for a couple of his college friends/whores to entertain the doctor. The old guy loves the attention, and agrees to build the free clinic for Sandy. After all, says the doctor, "Caleb would be proud." A blow to Sandy's pristine, do-gooder ego.
Marissa tells her mom Kaitlin left her own party. And before the cake was served, too! Marissa leaves as well. Later, Julie talks to Dr. Roberts about their relationship. He thinks their lives are too complicated to start things up. Julie understands.
Seth goes over to Summer's. She asks him how the interview went, and Seth can't tell her he didn't go, instead he lies his ass off and says it was "great." Plus he doesn't mention the pot-smoking. Summer continues to plan their future at Brown together. At least one of them will get in!
At home, Sandy gets a "I'm proud of you" from Kirsten. "You did it your way." Yet another blow to Sandy's do-gooder ego. Seth, you got any pot left for the old man?
And now, boys and girls, the end show montage to a indie hit:
Kaitlin at the trailer park looking sad
Marissa upset at the pier
Seth smoking more pot
Summer poring over Brown's finer courses
Julie locks up Doctor Roberts house looking sad
Ryan looks at a picture of he and Marissa, happier times
Next week: someone dies, I think. Johnny from whining over Marissa? Seth, a pot overdose? Ryan, not enough rage?
